FISHING REPORT ARCHIVE

Surf fishing reports are still slow, although I'm not sure how much of that is due to few fish or few fishermen. I know of one or two puppy drum having been caught and one or two folks striking out, but that's from asking all three of the people fishing the 16 miles of beach. One thing is certain, the weather has been incredibly nice.
Scott Lipps from Cincinnati OH emailed me a photo of his Christmas puppy drum a few days back, and I am finally posting his pic.
With the weather so nice and no one here, I went out with a friend for some bottom fishing on the wrecks just offshore. We didn't have great luck, but we did catch several keeper black sea bass, snapper, and triggerfish for a few meals. Both of the wrecks we stopped at were covered with small to large amberjack. We caught and released a couple even though we were trying not to catch them. While not the fish we were targeting, they are certainly a good tackle tester for anyone looking for a fight. I heard that the commercial fleet caught a few king mackerel, but they were finding the amberjack too thick to target the kings as well. Hard to believe it is January, as I was catching fish in shorts and a t-shirt.
Water temps are running mid 50's or better along the beach. The sound is mid 40's, inlet around 50 depending on the tide, and 5 miles offshore is 68 or so. Light SW wind will likely push the surf temp up a couple of degrees over the next day or two.
Have fun fishing!
Alan
