FISHING REPORT ARCHIVERating System:Good fishing: Not so good fishing: Official Release of Information Date: 09/11/05 Event: Hurricane Ophelia Time: 2100 Next Expected Release: 09/12/05, 0900 The National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center continues to predict a storm threat to Ocracoke Island, Hyde County, North Carolina. With the latest advisory, the time of landfall has been delayed to daytime Wednesday, however the onset of Tropical Storm force winds for Ocracoke has been moved forward to between 9PM Monday and 12PM Tuesday. The forecast tract currently places the storm path just to the west of Ocracoke Island putting the island in the NE quadrant. It is expected that watches and warnings will be posted later tonight. The storm is still stationary, but once the storm begins to move slowly closer, it is forecast to produce Tropical Storm and Hurricane force winds on Ocracoke Island for 48 hours or longer. This will be an extended event with potential for both significant ocean and sound side flooding. Rainfall will depend on the track and other factors. The potential for tornadoes will increase as time moves forward. Hurricane Ophelia is currently producing rough surf, rip currents, and beach erosion. Based on this timeline and discussion with the Ferry System Director, the N. C. Ferry System will begin securing vessels on Monday afternoon during daylight hours. It is expected the Hatteras Ferry will run as long as possible before settling in. With the complete absence of public transportation expected late Monday or Tuesday, Mr. Nathan Sears, with consensus of the Ocracoke Control Group, has issued a mandatory evacuation order to take effect at 6AM on Monday September 12, 2005. This action is consistent with the Hyde County Evacuation Decision matrix and the NC Emergency Management has verified our reading of the information. Emergency Medical Services will be limited to on island operations only. Only official vehicles and vehicles with Priority Reentry stickers will be allowed to travel to Ocracoke until further notice. During a State of Emergency, public safety services may be suspended, as situations warrant, or not available at all. Persons choosing to remain on Ocracoke do so at their risk. Individuals with health concerns should always evacuate. Please remember that this storm could easily intensify as Alex did and the forecast remains uncertain. Also, recall that many disaster response commodities are in short supply due to Hurricane Katrina. Hyde County will stand up the Emergency Operations Center as necessary and the Ocracoke Control Group has the authority to make any necessary decisions in the absence of communications from the governing board. Persons evacuating are advised that an evacuation shelter at Williamston High School on US 64 in Martin County should be available Monday afternoon. For further advisories, please monitor your local media. Reentry information will be available after the storm at 252-926-4374 or 252-928-3162, phone service permitting. Rating: |
