Ok, just back from the Civic & Business Meeting and here is what we now know.
As of Friday 5 a.m., the island will be open to everyone. The only access to the island will be the Swan Quarter & Cedar Island Ferry. Initially, what we've been told is that the ferries will run from 7, 10, 1 and 4 p.m...It was asked if reservations would be taken at that time and the answer was yes. Although we did hear that emergency vehicles would be priority. We were also told that residents would have priority on the first and last ferries running. It will be most complicated in the beginning just getting it all ironed out and we're hoping everyone will understand. I spoke with several people today and was assured that there would be enough food in the grocery stores. We are also expecting to have fuel brought over as well which is scheduled tomorrow or Friday. The north end of the island past the ramp 67 will not be open to vehicles by way of the beach and you won't be able to drive on the highway any further than the Federal Campground. The Park Rangers fought hard to get us 7 extra miles of beach in which to fish so we're really thankful for that. We will have from ramp 67 all the way to the south point. A great win!
One thing that was very important to put on the table tonight was that once anyone gets here on the island that they are pretty much on their own. Meaning, there will be no quick solutions in case of an emergency. Our resources are very limited at the present time. We do have a resident doctor here and E.M.T. but it's just important to realize our north end access has been closed at this point and time.
Many of you have asked what you could do to help here? Help with the clean up of our beaches. If anyone out there can bring 4WD dump trucks then let us know in an e-mail. They are needed big time to help rebuild the north end. The meeting went on for quite some time and I'm sure I haven't said everything but the message board will be open for any questions and we'll be happy to give you the best answers we can.
